HICAPACITY

GitHub.com is the place for open source developers to collaborate on their projects. But there’s a perception that GitHub and Git are the domain of Mac and *nix users. Not so! In this talk, Phil Haack, a GitHub employee, will show how GitHub makes open source collaboration fun and tools and techniques for using Git with GitHub on Windows.

Quilling, also known as paper filigree, is the manipulation of paper strip coils to create designs. This art form back to the Renaissance period but has seen a recent revival. Quilling is now used to create all sorts of art including cards, wedding invitations, home decor, and even 3D items. The paper coils and strips can create delicate flowers, elegant lines that mimic vector illustrations, and illusions of depth and texture.

This workshop will go over the basics of quilling including the tools of the trade, beginner techniques and shapes, and conclude with a crafting session to create typographic art that you can take with you. The workshop is run by Suann Chen, an advertising MFA student, avid DIY-er, crafter, and hobby artist.

While the workshop is free, you will need some inexpensive supplies. If you would like to purchase supplies at the workshop for $5, please RSVP by Friday, August 17th. The talk will be held on Thursday August 23rd at 6:00pm at HI Capacity.

Supply list:

  • Slotted pen tool for quilling (the only place I can find on the island that sells it is Craft Supply in Pearl City)
  • A couple of toothpicks or a needle
  • Glue (Elmer’s is fine)

Please join us for HI Capacity’s first arts and crafts workshop.

Please take a moment to watch this Erlang video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKfKtXYLG78

I’ll wait while you watch. Really.

OK?

George Lee, of Ikayzo, will then discuss Erlang. He’s working with it quite a bit and needs to share.

Erlang is awesome. Just knowing what Erlang is increases your IQ by 20 points. This is much like using the word “meta” in a sentence. Try it!

Amusing, dramatic description to come.

As a warm-up, Jason Axelson will give us a quick review of highlights from DEFCON 2012.
