HICAPACITY

On a recent visit to the LA Crashspace, Steve Goldstein gave me a tour of the 1500 square foot space that included a conference room, multiple machinery rooms, a storage area with unused machines, an area for snacks/drinks, and a bathroom/shower. He even demoed some of the cool gadgets they have been working. I even got a laser cutter demo!

Quite the sight to see.

Taking a look at their space confirms my feeling that it’s very possible to open a similar space in Honolulu. After all, Crash isn’t some hacker castle filled with mythical coders and makers. It’s a building with walls, tools and people just like you and me.

Here at HI Capacity, we’re working extemely hard to get a space up and running as quickly as possible. Our goal right now is to get a space with a table and some chairs. A place whose focus will be to build a community of do-ers producing cool things. We may not have all the tools and space lke Crash in the beginning. That’s OK, the machines will eventually come.

What we will have in place is the right culture to get things done.

Our vision is to create a maker ecosystem like LA Crashspace. With everyone’s contribution, we’ll create something amazing - A vibrant community of creatives coming together to teach, make, inspire and do.

Like Monopoly, but can’t stand how long it takes? Did you know there are official rules that make the game much shorter, but that you’ve probably never heard of?

Come to IGDA Honolulu’s Monopoly Edition of our regular board game nights and learn how to play Monopoly as it was intended - and in far less time than you thought possible! If that’s not enough, there’ll also be the Monopoly card game on hand!

This time, we’ll be at The Box Jelly on 307 Kamani Street. Parking is available across the street, or by Sports Authority. RSVP here.

As always, you’re free to bring whatever games you want! If Monopoly isn’t your thing, we’ll also have other award-winning games on hand, including Carcassone, Dominion, & Ticket to Ride.

See you there!

Good evening, as some of you have noticed, we’ve got a new image showing up on the right side of the web page. That’s our crowd-sourced funding widget! That will show you the current progress of our funding.

It originally said $10,000 but it did not account for the funding already contributed. So, I’ve reduced the total on the widget to $8,500. Click on the link to donate!

Our goal is $10,000 but we can start a minimum space at $5,000. Here are some examples of the funding levels:

$5,000 - Start moving into space with minimum equipment and basic furniture

$6,000 - Buy small tools and storage for the space

$7,000 - Buy projector for presentations and more furniture

$8,000 - Extra breathing for bills or more equipment :-)

$9,000 - Computer monitors and a couple of desks for programming hardware and software

$10,000 - Buy refrigerator/espresso machine for use by members (Caffeine, yay!)

Go click on the widget today so that we can build out our space!
