HICapacity is hosting a new (possibly monthly) event where we take a deep dive into public web pages with Chrome Dev Tools. The point is to look at what works well and what doesn’t work so well when trying to develop high traffic web pages for the public. We hope that through this we can find common patterns among quality web pages, discover interesting solutions to difficult problems, and maybe even some quick fixes that were overlooked.

We’ll also be exploring how to effectively use Chrome Dev Tools to debug your web page. Dev Tools offers a complete suite of tools including a HTML and JS debugger with breakpoints on both JS code and DOM events, a FPS (Frames per Second) counter, and much much more. I’ll be walking through some of the tools that I know how to use and when to use them effectively.

What’s Required:

• Please bring your own laptop with the Chrome web browser installed. So you can follow along.
• An open mind.

Optional:

• A few web sites for us to look at. Feel free to suggest your own website and maybe we can find a few trick to help speed up your site or tweak the UI/UX.

We would like this to be an informal discussion so be prepared to offer your own insight and opinions.

This talk will introduce brain-computer interfaces (BCI) assuming no background in the field. Beginning with the basic phenomenon of neural conduction, the talk will introduce major measurement technologies with a focus on electroencephalography (EEG) and offer examples of current BCI paradigms and their applications. Next, active areas of research and development, good DIY projects, and public data stores will be introduced. The talk will conclude with a discussion of current problems and future issues.

Trevor Alexander

Trevor Alexander received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hawai'i in 2012, with a focus in systems engineering. He is currently a second-year Master’s student, and is currently researching novel machine learning applications in brain-computer interfaces. His CV is available here.

Interested in learning about simple circuits? Enjoy making things light up? Join us for our conductive paint workshop!

This is a simple project where art meets electronics. We’ll be decorating and designing paper houses and lighting them up using conductive paint! No wires or soldering involved here!

In addition, Bob will be doing a little electronics 101 to explain how the circuit works and why things work the way they do. From there you can light up any mini project of your own using conductive paint!

For this workshop we will be providing a kit with all the pieces necessary to make one of these houses. The fee for the workshop is $5 to cover the cost of the parts in the kit. We will also provide Xacto knives, scissors, and markers to cut out and decorate your houses. However, we may not have enough to go around at once so if you want to bring your own Xacto knives and markers feel free to do so.
