HICAPACITY

Hooray! We will be having another Arduino Night on June 23rd. This time will be less instructional and more about hacking. :)

We will be covering simple motors in our demonstration and how to interface with them. All you will need will be the Arduino, we will bring the extra parts! :)

If you’ve done any Arduino hacking since the last meet, bring your project! We’ll be having a show and tell for the first 30 minutes.

Sign up here. (Facebook event)

All attendees who want to participate in the demonstration will need to buy an Arduino kit from Adafruit Industries: http://bit.ly/i9RlbZ

The kits at Adafruit sell out quick! You can purchase either of these kits from Sparkfun. Starter kit is $59.95 or the Inventor’s kit is $94.95 Personally, I would recommend the Inventor’s kit. :)

The price of the kit will run between $50 and $100, depending which one you purchase (with an additional $10 for shipping). Please order this ASAP if you want to attend as it should take about 3-5 business days to get to Hawaii. If you came to our first meeting, you won’t have to purchase anything! :D

Note: We’ll be building on this kit in future - so think of it as an investment!

Oceanit (http://www.oceanit.com/) has graciously provided their conference rooms for us to use for our very first meetup. They are located at 828 Fort Street in Downtown Honolulu. (Google Maps link) Parking to Oceanit is on Queen St. If you’re coming down Bishop, take a right on Queen, and the entrance will be on your right after a wide crosswalk. (If you hit Harbor Court, you’ve gone too far). It’s $2 dollars for parking through Park & Pay on each floor.

Hope to see you there!

IGDA of HonoluluTired of big name sequels and playing rehashed games? Intimidated by the video game controllers of today? Wish you could grab a hold of a joystick and play those games from your childhood? Want to just have FUN?

HI Capacity in conjunction with The Honolulu Chapter of the International Game Developer’s Association (@igdahonolulu and @gormlai) and the RetroGameGeeks of Honolulu (@arakiryan and @marcorbito) present:

Retro + Obscure Gaming Night!

If you’re a gamer that’s passionate about video games, you’ll definitely want to join us on June 13th from 7pm to 9pm at Halsey Terrace!

Come and learn about 6 games that will rock your world - but you’ve probably never heard of. The evening will begin with a series of small talks about lesser known games, after which people will be able to walk around and play at our small, ad-hoc mini-arcade. We encourage you to bring your own games (BYOG) to step-up and play from your childhood in our designated Retro arcade room!

We’ll also be playing such classic hits as:

  • Donkey Kong
  • Pac-Man
  • Street Fighter II
  • Gauntlet

If you would like to RSVP to this event, you’ll need to RSVP on Twtvite.

Instructions to Halsey Terrace:

Ryan Araki (@arakiryan) and Marc Orbito (@marcorbito) have graciously helped us secure a location by allowing us to participate in their Retro Gaming night.  Halsey Terrace is located at 620 Pool Street in Honolulu. (Google Maps. It is located in military housing, but you will not have to pass through a gate/checkpoint.

Tired of your <insert your version control system here>?

If you're a developer, you've probably seen the hullabaloo about distributed version control systems over the past few years. While you might have dismissed it as a passing fad, it's definitely a tool that every modern programmer should have in their tool belt.

New Kids on the Block: Step by Step with Git/Github
Still using Subversion? Still can't commit offline? Tired of slowww branching? Want to participate in the largest social coding website, evar? If you answered yes to any of those questions, you'll definitely want to join us on May 24th from 7pm to 9pm at Oceanit to learn how you too can start using git and Github. Jason Axelson, a security developer at Referentia, and Ryan Kanno, a software engineer at Civil Beat, will be going over the basics of git and how to get started on Github.

They'll be covering such topics as:
  1. How to get started on Github
  2. What is git and how is it different from <your favorite version control>?
  3. Git basics
  4. HI Capacity on Github!
Github is one of the most popular sites for sharing code. Come and learn how to use git to collaborate on any of the 2 million Github projects. Based on interest, we'll be following this presentation with a more advanced presentation in a few weeks that will cover advanced topics of git such as interactive adding, bisecting, and rebasing. The talk should last about 1 to 1.5 hours. At the end of this session, we hope to have you up and running and playing around with git.

If you plan to attend this meeting, you should definitely bring a laptop. Also, please, please try to install git prior to our meetup. If you need help, feel free to jump on the HI Capacity Google Group and ask questions! We'll be more than glad to help you get started.

We've limited this event to the first 30 people.

If you would like to RSVP to this event, you'll need to RSVP on Eventbrite.
